I just started working for a fleet company that deals with these new i30s & Golf… yeh Golf's are light years nicer inside but I'd bet my home the Hyundai will have a lifetime of trouble free ownership unlike the the latter. Heck some of the new Amarok V6s I drive fresh from the yard have problems starting or even die en route to the holding yard.

I can't help but think Fiat Tipo every time I see the new i30… Its that ugly!

Thank you for the great review, Marek. I've been driving 1.4L petrol + manual gearbox I30 for past 4 years. Over 120,000 km, the average (as measured by fueling up to the top each time) fuel consumption is 6.5 l/100 km. This the most frugal car I ever had pleasure of driving. And with 0 issues it is quite reliable as well. Now, according to your review, the new car is more fun to drive, has better steering and suspension. The only thing I don't remember you mentioning is noise insulation. Is it any better than the old car? All in all – should I need/decide/have to replace my car, I'll be sure to give new I30 a very good chance.

The I30 is meant to be a direct competitor to the golf. Here in Aus it gets 5year warranty and the top spec version is definatley the one to go for. With the gold plagued with reliability issues badge sometimes isn't everything.

Excellent work, Marek. Definitely a whiff of Golf about the styling, but I don't think people will pay the Golf price tag. Interestingly, when I looked at buying an i20, massive discounts were being offered before I'd barely sat down, so I guess the same will apply and it'll actually work out much better value.

Even if it enters Golf price territory, you'd still only get a bare Golf where you'd probably still be thousands if euros removed from 'luxury' VW additions like a radio or air conditioning.

The more critical you are you will be more taken in consideration by wiewers and car companies alike. Keep up the good work. At least one Romanian watches you

Are the brakes good or are they over-assisted? Because in the Ford C-Max 1.5 Ecoboost you need so little force to slam your face on the steering wheel, but they are hard to modulate and the pedal travel is stupidly long.

Doesn't get the heart racing, but will sell to loyal Hyundai people who like piece of mind.Same it looks to much like Golf/308.

Here in the U.S.A., a GT Sport trim will be available with 1.6T 201 HP and 7spd.DCT. That version will also have a multi-link rear suspension. Waiting to hear what reviewers will report on that trim which is due to arrive sometime this summer.

The front looks like a tapir. I like the previous version much more.

Hyundai have made a halo model for the i30 available later, the i30 N edition. Gives the competitors something to think about at least.

It's a nice car but a few 1000€ too expensive to be successful

this car is ugly, from the side and the rear it is just way way dated compared to megane, golf, 308, leon…the interior ! looks like a jeep wrangler , if i ever buy a korean car it would be a kia, they are much much better

Thanks for a good honest review Marek. I've been driving my i30 diesel for the last 5 years and it's has impressed me with its reliability, economy and practicality. I also think it's more stylish than the new model which looks more like a Peugeot 308 to me. However the good news is that Hyundai are launching a 5 door fastback version of the i30 next year…..now that should be worth waiting for?.

Your right Marek about different cars smells. My family has bought quite a few Renaults and they have always had a very strong new car smell that stayed around for a long time. Where as my grand parents Mercedes a class smell was more subtle and didn't last as long.
